"Trouble in Arcadia"
Cantatas with marionnettes by A. Scarlatti and F. Durante
The works of the most prolific and most skilled composer of baroque secular cantatas, Alessandro Scarlatti, as well as duos paraphrasing these cantatas by Scarlatti's admirer Francesco Durante form the core of our musical project. Little known today, a wealth handwritten copies survive to witness the esteem in which they were once held.
Amongst these "Andate o miei sospiri" fruit of a musical joust between Scarlatti and the Venetian Gasparini, who had sent him his own musical setting of this text " Alessandro replies with two versions, one in G minor, "human", the other called "inhuman" in F# minor. Playing upon the juxtaposition of these rich scores, we have created a mosaic of love lost in Arcadia - the original paradise. These reassembled airs, recitatives and duos permit us to hear reunited for the first time these works so intimately related. |
