Just to the north of the
Louis XIV’s resplendent Louvre lies the neighbourhood of Les Halles, long time the heart of French cultural life. Musicians, dancers and actors who by day purveyed the refined amusements of a monarch and by night revealed in Paris’s liveliest neighbourhood, marked by a rich camaraderie, the narrow streets, swarming with creative energy.
Three giants of Viola da Gamba literature were to be found on just such a street. Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, France’s most prolific composer in the same house as
Louis de Caix d’Hervelois and the immense
Marin Marais just a few houses away.
This program of highlights from France’s golden age of viol music pays tribute to the spirit of the “
Rue du Jour"
